How to Choose a Real Extra Virgin Olive Oil (and Avoid the Fakes)

How to Choose a Real Extra Virgin Olive Oil (and Avoid the Fakes)

In a world flooded with olive oils, choosing the right one for your kitchen can be surprisingly difficult. Labels like "pure," "light," or even "extra virgin" are often used loosely, and the difference between a supermarket bottle and a truly premium oil is far greater than most people realise.

At LUVIA OLIVE, we’re committed to bringing clarity back to the olive oil aisle. Here’s your go-to guide to identifying real extra virgin olive oil—and avoiding the fakes.

1. Know What Extra Virgin Really Means

Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) is the highest quality olive oil you can buy. To qualify as EVOO, the oil must:

  • Be mechanically extracted , not chemically treated.

  • Have free acidity below 0.8%.

  • Pass a sensory panel with no defects in taste or smell.

If it doesn’t meet all three standards, it’s not truly extra virgin—no matter what the label says.

2. Check for Single-Origin and Harvest Date

Premium olive oils proudly state where the olives come from—ideally from a single country or even a single estate. Blended oils from "EU & non-EU countries" are less traceable and often lower in quality.

Also look for a harvest date. Olive oil is best consumed within 18 months of harvest. If there’s no harvest date, it’s a red flag.

3. Avoid Misleading Labels

Terms like "pure olive oil" or "light olive oil" may sound healthy but are actually refined oils, stripped of most flavour and nutrients. Only extra virgin guarantees a nutrient-rich product.

Watch out for:

  • Plastic bottles

  • Vague terms like “Made in Italy” (without origin clarity)

  • Oils stored in clear glass

Real EVOO should come in dark glass or tins to protect against light damage.

4. Taste (and Smell) the Difference

A real extra virgin olive oil will have:

  • A fresh, grassy or fruity aroma

  • A slight bitterness (a sign of antioxidants)

  • A peppery finish that may tingle your throat

If it tastes flat, greasy, or like vegetable oil—it’s not the real deal.

5. Look for Lab Testing or Certifications

Some premium brands (like LUVIA) test their oils for polyphenol content, acidity, and pesticide residues. While not all genuine oils carry certifications, transparency is a good sign.

Don’t hesitate to ask for test results—or choose brands that publish them online.
